Carl Theodor Anger was a German mathematician and astronomer, born in Danzig on 31 July 1803 and died there on 25 March 1858. He was a student of and assistant to Friedrich Bessel at the Königsberg Observatory from 1827 until 1831, and was afterwards appointed astronomer by the Naturforschende Gesellschaft in Danzig. Besides his scientific work, especially that related to Bessel functions, he is known for his first-hand biographical notes on the life of Bessel, published in 1846 as Erinnerung an Bessel's Leben und Wirken. His other publications include Betrachtungen über verschiedene Gegenstände der neueren Geometrie, published in 1839 to 1841, and Grundzüge der neueren astronomische Beobachtungskunst, published in 1847. The Anger function and the Jacobi-Anger expansion carry his name.
