Carl Wilhelm Oseen, usually written Wilhelm Oseen, was a Swedish mathematician who worked in fluid dynamics. He was born in Lund on 17 April 1879, the son of a grammar school teacher and headmaster, loved both mathematics and history at school in Halmstad, and could hardly decide which to pursue at university. He died in the Engelbrekt district of Stockholm on 7 November 1944. The Oseen equations and the Oseen correction, which refine the description of slow viscous flow past an obstacle, are named for him.
