Donald Knuth is an American mathematician and computer scientist most famous for his contributions to the study of algorithms and inventing the TeX typesetting language. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 10 January 1938, the son of a Lutheran school teacher who played the church organ, and he was fascinated from his first years in secondary school by sentence structure, which led naturally toward writing computer code. He is known for the book Surreal Numbers and for his multi-volume work on the analysis of algorithms.
