Enrico Bombieri

Modern

Enrico Bombieri is an Italian mathematician and Fields medal winner who was born in Milan on 26 November 1940. He is known for work in analytic number theory, algebraic geometry, the theory of several complex variables, minimal surfaces and the theory of finite groups. He was already studying a number theory textbook at the age of thirteen, studied with G Ricci in Milan and then went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied with H Davenport. He received the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver in 1974 for contributions to the study of the prime numbers, to univalent functions and the local Bieberbach conjecture, and to minimal surfaces, in particular his work on Sergei Bernstein's problem in higher dimensions.
