Ernst Witt

Modern

Ernst Witt was a German mathematician and a leading algebraist. He proved important results on Lie algebras. He was born on the Baltic island of Alsen (now Als, Denmark) on 26 June 1911 and died in Hamburg on 3 July 1991. His name is attached to many ideas in algebra, including Witt vectors, the Witt algebra, the Witt ring of quadratic forms and the Witt theorem on quadratic spaces, and he is a central figure in twentieth-century German algebra and number theory.

In mathematics, Witt's theorem, named after Ernst Witt, is a basic result in the algebraic theory of quadratic forms: any isometry between two subspaces of a nonsingular quadratic space over a field k may be extended to an isometry of the whole space.
