Franz Rellich was an Austrian-German mathematician who made important contributions in mathematical physics, particular in quantum mechanics. He was born in Tramin in South Tirol, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Italy), on 14 September 1906 and died in Göttingen on 25 September 1955. His work on the perturbation theory of operators and on compactness in function spaces grew from the Göttingen tradition of connecting analysis with physics, and the Rellich compactness theorem and the Rellich identity carry his name.
