Friedrich Bessel

Early Modern

Wilhelm Bessel determined the positions and proper motions of stars. He also used a method of mathematical analysis involving what is now known as the Bessel function. He was born in Minden, Westphalia, on 22 July 1784 and died in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia), on 17 March 1846. The Bessel functions carry his name, and he studied them systematically in 1824, and Bessel's correction, the statistical technique, is also named after him.
