Gustav Herglotz was a Czech-born German mathematician best known for his works on the theory of relativity and seismology. He was born in Wallern in Bohemia (now Volary, Czech Republic) on 2 February 1881 and died in Göttingen on 22 March 1953. His mathematical work ranged from potential theory and complex analysis to celestial mechanics, and his name is carried by the Herglotz representation theorem for positive harmonic functions. He belongs to the Göttingen circle of mathematical physicists.
