Heinrich Maschke

Modern

Heinrich Maschke was a German mathematician, born in Breslau in Prussia, now Wrocław in Poland, on 24 October 1853, who died in Chicago on 1 March 1908. He studied at the University of Heidelberg under Königsberger and then at the University of Berlin, and he worked on group theory and on differential geometry. In 1892 he joined the new University of Chicago, where he, Bolza and Moore built a strong research school. He is best known for Maschke's theorem of 1899, which says that when the order of a finite group is not divisible by the characteristic of the field, its finite-dimensional representations are completely reducible.
