Hendrik Lorentz is best known for his work on electromagnetic radiation and the FitzGerald-Lorentz contraction. He developed the mathematical theory of the electron. He was born in Arnhem in the Netherlands on 18 July 1853 and died in Haarlem on 4 February 1928. The Lorentz factor, the quantity that appears in length contraction and time dilation, is a mathematical object named after him through Lorentzian electrodynamics.
