Hugh Montgomery

Modern

Hugh Montgomery is a mathematician working in multiplicative and analytic number theory. The Mathematics Genealogy Project records his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1972, with a dissertation titled Topics in Multiplicative Number Theory written under Harold Davenport, and lists many students at the University of Michigan, among them Sidney Graham, Steven Gonek, J. Brian Conrey and Russell Lyons. He is the author of the pair correlation conjecture of 1973, which describes the statistical spacing between pairs of zeros of the Riemann zeta function and which Andrew Odlyzko later supported with large-scale computer calculations of the zeros.
