Hugo Steinhaus

Modern

Hugo Dyonizy Steinhaus (14 January 1887 to 25 February 1972) was a Polish mathematician and educator, born in Jasło in Austria-Hungary to a family with Jewish roots. He obtained his doctorate under David Hilbert at Göttingen in 1911 and later became a professor at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów, where he helped establish what became known as the Lwów School of Mathematics. He is credited with discovering Stefan Banach, with whom he made a notable contribution to functional analysis through the Banach-Steinhaus theorem. After the Second World War he helped found the mathematics department at Wrocław University and revive Polish mathematics. He wrote around 170 articles and books and is regarded as one of the early founders of game theory and probability theory.
