Ivan Morton Niven was a Canadian-American mathematician, born on 25 October 1915 and died on 9 May 1999, best remembered for his work on Waring's problem in number theory, the question of writing every whole number as a sum of a bounded number of powers. He worked for many years as a professor at the University of Oregon and was president of the Mathematical Association of America. He also wrote several books on mathematics, which made his name familiar to students as well as to specialists in number theory.
