Ivan Matveevich Vinogradov was a Soviet mathematician, born on 14 September 1891 in the Velikiye Luki district of Pskov Oblast and died on 20 March 1983. He was one of the creators of modern analytic number theory and a dominant figure in mathematics in the USSR. He graduated from the University of St. Petersburg, where he became a professor in 1920, and from 1934 directed the Steklov Institute of Mathematics for the rest of his life apart from the years 1941 to 1946. He received the Stalin Prize in 1941.
