Julius Peter Christian Petersen was a Danish mathematician, born in Soro, West Zealand, on 16 June 1839 and died in Copenhagen on 5 August 1910. His contributions to the field of mathematics led to the birth of graph theory. A graph in this sense is a set of points joined by lines, and the study of such networks grew into a large branch of modern mathematics, so his contributions are counted among the origins of a subject that now underlies much of discrete mathematics and computer science.
