Karol Borsuk was a Polish mathematician who made important contributions to topology. He was born in Warsaw, then in the Russian Empire, on 8 May 1905 and died in Warsaw on 24 January 1982. He founded the theory of retracts and shape in topology, and in 1933 he gave the first proof of what is now called the Borsuk-Ulam theorem, whose formulation he attributed to Stanisław Ulam. He gave the first proof of that antipodal-points theorem.
