Laurent Lafforgue (born 6 November 1966) is a French mathematician who has made outstanding contributions to the Langlands program in the fields of number theory and analysis, and in particular proved the Langlands conjectures for the automorphism group of a function field. The crucial contribution was the construction of compactifications of certain moduli stacks of shtukas, and the proof was the result of more than six years of concentrated effort. He won two silver medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1984 and 1985 and entered the École Normale Supérieure. In 2002, at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing, he received the Fields Medal together with Vladimir Voevodsky. His brothers Thomas and Vincent are also mathematicians.

In mathematics, Lafforgue's theorem, due to Laurent Lafforgue, completes the Langlands program for general linear groups over algebraic function fields, by giving a correspondence between automorphic forms on these groups and representations of Galois groups.
