Francis William Lawvere was an American mathematician and philosopher known for his foundational work in category theory, topos theory and the philosophy of mathematics, born on February 9, 1937. He introduced algebraic theories as categories, developed the Elementary Theory of the Category of Sets as an alternative foundation of mathematics, founded categorical logic and co-founded the field of topos theory. Born in Muncie, Indiana, he began his university studies at Indiana University in 1955, where he studied continuum mechanics with Clifford Truesdell, and went to study with Samuel Eilenberg at Columbia University in 1960. A central theme of his work was the search for a rigorous mathematical foundation for classical continuum mechanics and physics based on categorical methods. He died on January 23, 2023.
