Oscar Zariski was an American mathematician, born on 24 April 1899 and died on 4 July 1986. The lead of his article describes him as a Russian-born scientist and as one of the most influential algebraic geometers of the twentieth century. Algebraic geometry studies the shapes that are defined by polynomial equations, and being singled out as one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century in that subject marks him as a central builder of its modern form.

He left Kiev in 1920 to study at the University of Rome where he became a disciple of the Italian school of algebraic geometry, studying with Guido Castelnuovo, Federigo Enriques and Francesco Severi.
