Otto Schreier worked in combinatorial group theory, particularly on subgroups of free groups and on knot groups. He was born in Vienna on 3 March 1901 and died in Hamburg on 2 June 1929, aged twenty-eight. Within his short life he proved that every subgroup of a free group is itself free, a result now known as the Nielsen-Schreier theorem, and introduced the Schreier coset graph and the Schreier refinement theorem. He is counted among the founders of combinatorial group theory.
