Øystein Ore was a Norwegian mathematician who worked in ring theory, Galois theory and graph theory. He was born in Kristiania, now Oslo, on 7 October 1899 and died in Oslo on 13 August 1968. He graduated from the Katedralskole in 1918 and from the University of Kristiania in 1922. His research there was supervised by Thoralf Skolem, and he spent time at Göttingen University, where he was influenced by Emmy Noether and found her new approach to algebra especially exciting. His thesis, Zur Theorie der algebraischen Körper, was submitted in 1924 to the University of Kristiania, and in 1925 he took up a research assistant position at the University of Oslo. He also visited the Sorbonne in Paris and was a fellow at the Mittag-Leffler Institute in Sweden.
