Pafnuty Chebyshev

Modern

Pafnuty Lvovich Chebyshev (16 May 1821 to 8 December 1894) was a Russian mathematician considered to be the founding father of Russian mathematics. He is known for fundamental contributions to probability, statistics, mechanics and number theory, and a number of important mathematical concepts are named after him, including the Chebyshev inequality, which can be used to prove the weak law of large numbers, the Bertrand-Chebyshev theorem, Chebyshev polynomials, Chebyshev linkage and Chebyshev bias. His surname has been transliterated in many different ways, such as Tchebichef and Tschebyschev, and Chebyshev is the form widely accepted in English.

The theorem is named after Russian mathematician Pafnuty Chebyshev, although it was first formulated by his friend and colleague Irénée-Jules Bienaymé. The theorem was first proved by Bienaymé in 1853 and more generally proved by Chebyshev in 1867.
