Percy Alexander MacMahon was an English mathematician, especially noted in connection with the partitions of numbers and enumerative combinatorics. Born in Malta in 1854 to a British military family, he attended Cheltenham College and the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and was posted to India as an artillery officer in 1873. A period of sick leave in 1878 began the sequence of events that led to his becoming a mathematician rather than a soldier. He discovered MacMahon's master theorem and proved it in his monograph Combinatory analysis in 1916.
