Pierre Joseph Louis Fatou was a French mathematician and astronomer, born on 28 February 1878 and died on 9 August 1929. He is known for major contributions to several branches of analysis, the part of mathematics concerned with limits, integration and functions. Two ideas carry his name: the Fatou lemma, an inequality relating the integral of a limit inferior of functions to the limit inferior of their integrals, and the Fatou set, which arises in the study of the iteration of complex functions.
