Poul Heegaard was a Danish mathematician who, with Max Dehn, was the first to classify compact surfaces. He was born in Copenhagen on 2 November 1871 and died in Oslo on 7 February 1948. Two-dimensional manifolds were considered by Riemann as Riemann surfaces and rigorously classified at the beginning of the twentieth century by Heegaard and Dehn. He was the second of two children, and his father Sophus, who had an interest in astronomy and mathematics, strongly influenced him as a boy.
