Preda Mihăilescu

Modern

Preda V. Mihăilescu (born 23 May 1955 in Bucharest) is a Romanian mathematician, best known for his proof of Catalan's conjecture, first proposed in 1844. After leaving Romania in 1973 he settled in Switzerland, studied mathematics and computer science in Zürich, and received a doctorate from ETH Zürich in 1997 with a thesis on cyclotomy of rings and primality testing, supervised by Erwin Engeler and Hendrik Lenstra. He did research for several years at the University of Paderborn and has held a professorship at the University of Göttingen since 2005. In 2002 he proved the number-theoretical conjecture formulated by Eugène Charles Catalan that had stood unresolved for 158 years, and the proof appeared in Crelle's Journal in 2004.
