Simon Plouffe, born on 11 June 1956 in Saint-Jovite, Quebec, is a Canadian mathematician. In 1995 he discovered the Bailey-Borwein-Plouffe formula, also called the BBP algorithm, which permits the computation of the nth binary digit of pi without computing the digits before it. A later formula of his, published in 2022, allows extracting the nth digit of pi in decimal. In 1995 he also co-authored The Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, which was made into the website On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences dedicated to integer sequences. In 1975 he broke the world record for memorizing digits of pi by reciting 4096 digits, a record that stood until 1977.
