Thoralf Albert Skolem was a Norwegian mathematician, born on 23 May 1887 and died on 23 March 1963. He worked in three connected areas: mathematical logic, set theory and number theory. Mathematical logic concerns the formal study of proof and truth, set theory concerns collections and infinity, and number theory concerns the properties of the integers, so his career crossed the border between foundations and arithmetic.
