Vadim G. Vizing was born in Kiev, Ukraine, on 25 March 1937. After the war his family was forced to move to Siberia, and he studied at the University of Tomsk from 1954 to 1959 before going to the Steklov Institute in Moscow for a Ph.D. that he did not finish there. He returned to Siberia to work at the Mathematical Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Akademgorodok near Novosibirsk, where the graph theorist A. A. Zykov helped him, and obtained his Ph.D. in 1966. His fundamental results on the edge colouring of graphs date from 1964. In 1968 he moved back to Ukraine, lived in Odessa from 1974, and taught mathematics at the Academy for Food Technology until his retirement. In 1968 he stated the conjecture on the domination number of Cartesian products of graphs that bears his name.
