Vera T. Sós

Modern

Vera Turán Sós (11 September 1930 to 22 March 2023) was a Hungarian mathematician who specialized in number theory and combinatorics. She was a student and close collaborator of both Paul Erdős and Alfréd Rényi and collaborated frequently with her husband Pál Turán. Until 1987 she worked at the Department of Analysis at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest and afterwards at the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics. She was elected a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1985 and a member in 1990, and in 1997 was awarded the Széchenyi Prize. Her contributions include the Kővári-Sós-Turán theorem on the maximum possible number of edges in a bipartite graph that does not contain certain complete subgraphs, and the friendship theorem proved with Erdős and Rényi.
