William Thomas Tutte was an English and Canadian code breaker and mathematician, born on 14 May 1917 and died on 2 May 2002. During the Second World War he made a fundamental advance in the cryptanalysis of the Lorenz cipher, a major German cipher used for top-secret communications within the Wehrmacht High Command. He also made significant mathematical accomplishments, including foundational work in graph theory and matroid theory. He began the study of matroids by expanding on work that Hassler Whitney had first developed in the mid 1930s, and his theorems have been used to advance graph theory ever since.
