Wilhelm Grunwald was a German mathematician, born on 15 July 1909, who introduced the Grunwald-Wang theorem, though his original statement and proof of this contained a small error that was corrected by Shianghao Wang. He published the paper Ein allgemeiner Existenzsatz für algebraische Zahlkörper in the Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik in 1933. He later left mathematics to become a science librarian and was director of the Göttingen university library. He died on 7 June 1989.
