Yoshikazu Nakai, also romanized Yosikazu Nakai, is a Japanese algebraic geometer. With Masayoshi Nagata he wrote the Japanese textbook Algebraic Geometry, published in 1957. His name is attached to the Nakai criterion, a numerical test for the ampleness of a line bundle on a projective scheme that is now usually called the Nakai-Moishezon criterion, and to the Nakai conjecture of 1961, which proposes that an algebraic variety is smooth exactly when its ring of differential operators is generated by the derivations it contains. The conjecture is known to hold for curves and remains open in general.
