Yuri Vladimirovich Linnik was a Ukrainian-born mathematician, born in Bila Tserkva on 21 January 1915, who worked on number theory, probability theory and mathematical statistics. He entered Leningrad University in 1932 to study physics, then moved to the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics because of what he called an irresistible bent for higher arithmetic. His studies were interrupted by military service in the winter of 1939 to 1940, and after the siege of Leningrad ended in early 1944 he returned to the city from Kazan. In a 1941 paper he introduced the large sieve method in number theory. A biographical source lists 240 of his research papers. He died in Leningrad on 30 June 1972.
