Differentiation rules are the standard rules for computing the derivative of a function in calculus, covering how derivatives combine under addition, multiplication, division, and composition of functions, and how to differentiate common function families such as polynomials, exponentials, logarithms, and trigonometric functions. Unless stated otherwise the rules are given for real functions of a real variable, though most of the same formulas apply wherever they are well defined, including for complex valued functions. Taken together they let a calculus student reduce the derivative of nearly any elementary function to a short mechanical calculation rather than a limit computed from first principles.
