In mathematics, the lowest common denominator, or least common denominator, abbreviated LCD, is the lowest common multiple of the denominators of a set of fractions. Rewriting a set of fractions over their lowest common denominator simplifies adding, subtracting and comparing them, since the fractions can then be combined directly once they share a common denominator. The concept is one of the earliest tools taught in arithmetic for working with fractions that do not already share a denominator.
