Francesco Paolo Cantelli was an Italian mathematician, born on 20 December 1875 and died on 21 July 1966. He made contributions to celestial mechanics, probability theory and actuarial science. Celestial mechanics applies mathematics to the motion of heavenly bodies, probability theory studies chance, and actuarial science applies probability to insurance and pensions, so his work combined an old branch of applied mathematics with the newer mathematics of chance in early twentieth century Italy.
