Heinz Hopf (19 November 1894 to 3 June 1971) was a German mathematician who worked on dynamical systems, topology and geometry. He was born in Gräbschen, then in the German Empire and now Grabiszyn, part of Wrocław, Poland. His father was born Jewish and converted to Protestantism a year after Heinz was born, and his mother came from a Protestant family. He showed mathematical talent early and in 1913 entered the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelm University, where he attended lectures by Ernst Steinitz, Adolf Kneser, Max Dehn, Erhard Schmidt and Rudolf Sturm. When the First World War broke out in 1914 he enlisted eagerly, was wounded twice, and received the Iron Cross first class in 1918.

The Hopf link topology is highly conserved in proteins and adds to their stability. == History == The Hopf link is named after topologist Heinz Hopf, who considered it in 1931 as part of his research on the Hopf fibration.
