Rafael Bombelli

Early Modern

Rafael Bombelli was an Italian mathematician who wrote an influential algebra text and made free use of both negative numbers and complex numbers. He was born in Bologna, in the Papal States, in January 1526 and died, probably in Rome, in 1572. His book set out rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying and extracting roots of complex numbers when solving cubic equations, and he developed the first working arithmetic of complex numbers.
