Vladimir Arnold was a Ukrainian-born mathematician who won a Wolf prize for his work on dynamical systems, differential equations and singularity theory. He was born in Odessa, in the USSR (now Odesa, Ukraine), on 12 June 1937 and died in Paris on 3 June 2010. Arnold's cat map, a chaotic map from the torus into itself that he illustrated in the 1960s with an image of a cat, is the best-known example of his work on chaos and dynamics.
